Friends & Supporters: The largest and oldest fir still stands along with other sentinel trees from this once dense conifer forest - despite the logging by EWEB that occurred Monday, August 2nd. It’s a travesty that most of this forest grove on public land above 40th and Patterson was logged by EWEB last Monday, just hours before an Oregon Land Use Board of Appeal (LUBA) stay on cutting trees went into effect. EWEB accelerated the logging and cut over 250 trees in short order. These noble giants – conifer and deciduous -- were laid helter-skelter across more than an acre of sloping meadow. The average age of the large trees taken down in this clear-cutting debacle is estimated at 130 years. Despite EWEB’s desire to turn this lush forest into bare rock ready to frack for construction, the site is still punctuated with several majestic firs and surrounded by growth of younger co-dominant, once-suppressed trees. This area can be a thriving forest again if left alone. The stay against further cutting or destroying more trees remains in place despite the logging. --TAKE ACTION NOW--Support Save Eweb Forest to continue the LUBA appeal that will determine whether EWEB has authority to construct two giant water reservoirs on site, a deviation from original one-reservoir plan. Despite disappointment at what was lost, this project can still be limited a less impactful one, and EWEB can be sent a message that they must be transparent with the public about their plans.Make checks payable to: Eugene Peaceworks (Save Eweb Forest), P.O.
